  • Still absolutely damn fine after all these years. Explosive, thick, treacly like a vintage port. Silky and figgy and not at all tannic. Full of richness and gorgeously textured and layered. So much interest. Fruit still energetic, and although the wine tends towards sweetness rather than acidity, it's more balanced than you'd think. And the alcohol, though high, is well hidden under all those heady aromas.

  • Blind, deep ruby, notes of black peppers, menthol, ripe berries, ultra ripe, what is this? Never had anything this style yet very appealing and seems that it will last another 20+ years.

  • Despite I let the bottle go back in the restaurant i was happy to get to try this "legendary" wine.
Someone postet a review on 2004 Taberner on Cellartracker and 2000 Taberner on Vivino, but as far as I have been able to find out the 2005 Taberner was the first ever produced - and with very good reviews.
With that in mind and the fact that I was blown away when I tasted the 2007 Taberner last time in 2017, 10 years old, gave me high expectations.
I was presented with this bottle when ordering the 2014 Taberner. "Sorry, we are out of the 2014, but if You are interested then You can try this one..."
The color was mature brick stone.
Nose "over the top". Overripe fruit notes with vinegar with autumn forest soil and animal wet fur - classic.
The elements from the nose was present in the mouth and fruit and body in decline, leaving You with some unbalance with present acidity and a leaner
wine but still with something left, also regarding finish.
I have not ticket the "flawed/defective" box, as this wine to the best of my knowledge is a normal healthy bottle that simply have been opened "in its autumn".
You could drink the wine with food to give increased acidity something "counteraction".
I have no idea how this bottle have been kept, but I would not be surprised if You can still find a good example if it have been kept in cooler, stable conditions.
It reminds me of the 1928 Chateau La Lagune that also, when I tasted it (25 years ago) were "over the top", but had aged with beauty...

  • I almost cannot believe how this wine has evolved since I last tasted it just under ten years ago. After the second glass I scribbled this down: "absolute magic, surreal, cosmic, phenomenally good. Years of life left in this vintage. Years." I expected it to be slowing down, showing tiredness and lack of life. How wrong I was! It's a triumph of a wine and a fascinating insight into Syrah and what it can do, what it can be, outside its two natural habitats - Rhône and South Australia. What are typically secondary flavours and aromas take centre stage: chocolate, cinnamon, treacle, liquorice, carob, nutmeg... At the heart is a sweet but spicy fruit that's so dense and rich, it just makes you shake your head in wonder. It's long, powerful and all-enveloping, and it never seems to finish. It's still sufficiently tannic to suggest even more longevity. It's now 12 years old but properly cellared I'd be amazed if this didn't last another 10 years. Which is why I'm extending its drinking window to 2028. This is great, great stuff. And by the way, look what I wrote in 2007: "...there's no reason why it won't be sensational in a decade." I was absolutely right - it is a decade later, and it's sensational. I have just one bottle left. When to drink it? Argh!
