  • Corkaged at The Mark Hotel’s bar, this was my first experience with Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet having had drunk a decent amount of Bâtard-Montrachet and this did not disappoint. From the smallest AOC in the Côte de Beaune, this was a thoroughly interesting experience. Immediately I found the nose to be softer than that of many Bâtard-Montrachets I’ve previously encountered, with florality, oak, honey, vanilla and hints of spices coming across. The palate was the star of the show as honeyed melon, peach, stone fruits and chalk dominated the upfront before the mid-palate brought in a balance of salinity, oak and cream. As a whole, the softness of the nose continued onto the palate as a quintessentially Bâtard-Montrachet oily finish ensued making for a brilliant drinking experience from start to finish.

  • Zoom blind tasting #2 (At home during circuit breaker): A pretty good Criots-Batard. This had a rather sweet, forward nose at first, with some vanillin-laced oak aromas dancing around a rather candied core of stone fruit and tropical pineapple. There was chalky mineral undertone that pulled this back to Burgundy, but I might have otherwise thought new world. With time and air though, the sweetness faded somewhat, showing some of the salted butter, savoury earth and mineral tones I normally associate with a Côte de Beaune Grand Cru. Pretty nice. I liked the palate a whole lot more than the nose though. Any overt new oak or sweetness was very much in the background here. What I got instead was a gorgeous mouthful of Grand Cru Burg, with luscious flavours of sweet red apples and ripe melons lined with a wonderfully salty, saline minerality - think chalk and stone and seashells. The 2008 vintage came through really nicely too, with juicy, lemony acidity and a lovely sense of minerally structure that lent the wine a beautiful sense of freshness, focus and definition throughout. The finish was decent rather great, but otherwise, this was a really nice showing. This still has its best years ahead of it though - I would give it another 5-6 years at least. It will probably last for decades on that structure though.

  • Opened an hour before serving. Significantly reductive start that took 10+ minutes of aeration to mostly dissipate, but I don't think this ever completely harmonized. Lots of rich and fleshy apple with tropical hints start-thru-middle, then leaner and more tart towards finish. Lots here, but this bottle was not perfectly composed. Still very enjoyable (90 points tonight?), but I think there is even more here.

  • Still youthful. Perfect balance of aciditiy, fruit (primary but not over powering), touch of creaminess & minerality. Everything comes together beautifully. Felt like it could hold like this for another 5 years. Wish i had more bottles.

  • Intense minerality, good acidity, dense but not opulent, still feels very young
