Brick red, ever so slightly hazy, medium legs, nice aged GSM aromas of red berries, funky earth, roast meat, maybe a hint of licorice, and herbs, almost effervescent on the tongue, finely grained tannins. Lighter bodied than my usual experience with CdP, but plenty of acidic brightness and fruit - a perfect match with lamb chops on a cool spring evening.

(CLOS CALVAIRE Mayard) Chateauneuf Dear Friends, I’ll cut to the chase here – no chairlifts needed. This is one of the top deals of the year in 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape (or any year for that matter, yes, even 2007). That was an easy offer to read, no? I’ll refrain from calling this a “Holiday Special” to save Niki a few hours sleep tonight but it certainly qualifies (I don’t think it will matter - I'm hitting the send button and running for cover regardless). Here goes... This is the premier bottling of 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos Calvaire, taken from traditional cement and corked on your behalf last week – no oak, no manipulation, nothing but the essence of the vintage. The tariff deserves a double-take but it’s not a misprint (there are Cote du Rhone’s more costly than this?) We also have special half bottles that are slightly more $ than 2 x 750mls but ? You’re kidding? I could probably count 100 times I searched my cellar for a high-end half bottle of Rhone wine like this at a “bring it to the beach rolling around in my car” price-point but it just never exists... If you have any interest in either format, please let us know at your earliest convenience as I have to go with first come first served due to low margins. Here goes... [Parker (from last month’s WA): “Francoise Mayard and her sister, Beatrice, are two of the many women who are in positions of power managing Chateauneuf du Pape estates (there are probably more in this appellation than in any other in France). They did not present the two cuvees of 2008’s I tasted last year (none were bottled - JR), but their 2009s are extremely strong efforts. This is a relatively large estate of over 100 acres with at least 20+ parcels spread throughout the appellation. One of the top sites is a huge (20 acres) parcel situated in the heart of La Crau. All three 2009’s have the potential to turn out as well as the 2007s, the finest vintage yet produced in terms of high quality. Composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault aged in cement tanks, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire exhibits knock-out, explosive aromas of jammy red and black fruits intermixed with truffles, Provencal herbs, licorice and barbecue smoke. This deep, rich, full-bodied effort is one of the most voluptuously-textured, concentrated wines I have tasted from Francoise Mayard. It should drink well for 10-12 years. 90-93pts” 2009 Domaine du Pere Pape Chateauneuf du Pape “Clos du Calvaire” 750ml - (WA90-93) (compare at up to $35+) 2009 Domaine du Pere Pape Chateauneuf du Pape “Clos du Calvaire” 375ml - (WA90-93) (no comparisons, they usually don’t offer this format) ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar– it’s already been bottled – they can’t do a second run for us. Really pretty nose of fruit roll-up and hint of earth/stone. Deep purple. Palate disappointing on PnP, maybe it will open/settle...

Another bottle with secondary fermentation. Barely drinkable and it just got worse with air this time.

Tasted after 90 minutes of air. Some dark tar. Firm tannins. Some crunchy fruit.
