  • Between the 04, 08, and this 05 El Guapo, 3/3 corks were completely intact when opened. 08 definitely sweetest of all, and That actually seemed to be its downfall. The 2004 was muted, yet still had a very good balance and drink like a pinot noir. Left a ton of sediment on the bottom of the glass. This 05? Different even still. This has more of a barbecued potato chip nose and palate. Actually kind of delicious I say with a sheepish grin, as I think that a cork taint can cause a similar presentation. The amount of fruit on the 2005 is noticeably more than the 2004. But that doesn't necessarily make it better. If I had my preference, I would drink the 2005 with barbecued Lay's potato chips, drink the 2004 with an herbed pork loin, and drink the 2008 with a meat and cheese tray. Really an awesome side by side by side comparison on a day when I had no idea there would be a side by side by side comparison. Jim Johnson has made these wines to age well, and age well they have done. Very little sediment on this 2005, which makes me think it has a lot more life ahead of it than the 04. It also has more balance than the 2008, which makes me think it will more than likely outlive the 08. Alas, this is my last one, so I will never know whether or not that statement is true unless Jim gives me another bottle of 05! So Jim, if you're reading this, give me a holler :)

  • Still holding its own, but about 1/3rd on the decline.

  • Not great, I think it was passed it's prime. Popped and poured, immediately had leather, dust, and some lite fruit. First taste was very astringent and difficult to drink. I hoped some air would help this but acid just got stronger and fruit disappeared.

The tempranillo vines used to make this was approximately 3-5 yrs old so it doesn't surprise me that it didn't have the structure to last very long. Don't let this rating scare you away from Texas Temps now, there are some awesome ones out there.
