  • Rated this a 93 four years ago, and at that time I would say that was a very solid and correct rating. Four years later, this one has started to lose a little bit of ground. Not quite as verbose and youthful, starting to show a lot of tart but still quite juicy fruit, tart underripe raspberry and plum, raisin oatmeal cookie. Finishes dirty...earth / soil. Still seems like this is tannic, but perhaps it's just the tannin dropping out! I think this 11 won't hold nearly as long as the 08, but at rhis time this one drinks the best vs the 04 and 08.

  • This is an incredibly young Temp with a curtain of tannin on the rear. This is "the bar" for TX tempranillo without a doubt!! This wine was singing tonight with such incredible youth! Black cherry on the open, earth and fig and black marmalade rounds out the middle. The finish is dark and expressive. Black cherry comes back out along with some very stiff tannin. A hint of sweet lavender and jasmine on the finish. Elegant yet dirty. Suave yet raunchy. What a great wine. The others are going to long term storage for at least five years and will drink the other years instead!! The last 100ml plus or minus was held for the next day, and was met with a strange tart note that didn't really contribute anything positive (at all). I kept waiting for this to air out, but it never really did. Glad I have a few more of these!

  • Yes, the last vintage of the famous El Guapo from Alamosa is coming to an end. This lovely Rioja style red wine is a blend of Tempranillo (86%), Graciano (10%), and Garnacha (4%). The 2011 vintage has to be winemaker Jim Johnson’s finest achievement. There just aren’t enough good words to use to describe this wonderful work of art. Here are some “to the point” buzz words to help get you excited. It's dry, it's aromatic, it's tobaccoy, it's earthy, it's cherry, it's balanced, it has lovely medium tannins, and it's just super beautiful! Care to add more? Please do! Your complimentary words will only enhance the pleasure as you sip and swirl. Keep your remaining bottles in a good quality wine cellar and you will more than likely have some long lasting El Guapos until 2020….maybe even longer. Perhaps over the remaining years, we’ll pull out a bottle from our stash on occasion and see how it progresses. Something great to look forward to! Savor every last bottle, cherish every last sip, 2011 was a phenomenal year for grapes in spite of and due to the drought and Jim did an amazing job with this vintage. It's simply a beautiful red! Cheers everyone!
