A very unusual pinot. If someone told me it was syrah then I may have had a different experience. The wine was not at all unpleasant, though. A bit hot and very dark color. It opened up after about 30 mins. Still spicy with a bit of funk mentioned by earlier reviews. I agree with the comments on synthetic corks.

This wine has progressively improved with age and now sports a well-developed dark cherry flavor. When I first drank it in the Spring of 2006, I found it disjointed with some obnxious off putting flavors I referred to as pinot funk, and which I now think is that annoying cola flavor. In July 1977, there was the begining of the dark cherry development but the mouth feel was still a bit rough. I opened a bottle today after an EBob posting suggesting that people should drink up their 2005 Alcinas, so I thought a 2004 was definitely at risk. There is a port-like component to the black cherry that might reflect premature aging caused by the synthetic cork, but at this point it is an enhancement, not a negtive. Color relatively dark for pinot. Mouth feel is nice and smooth.

Interesting orange peel note. More acidity than fruit at this point.
