  • The mysteries of wine aging (2011 IPNC): Grarnet color. Nose with rhubarb and cherry cola, later with some light strawberry. Palate spicy but glycerins make this delicate and gentle in mouth, acids minimal on medium finish. Wouldn't hang on to this much longer if you have some IMO.

  • Dark cherry red in the glass with little signs of thinning. On the nose, this shows smoke, game, sous bois, and some cherry character. On the palate, the cherry is more prominent, nearly equal to the smoke and sous bois components. Medium acids keep it all held together. This wine has been at this place in its development for several years now and shows little sign of declining. Remainders the next day show some black olive notes emerging as the wine oxidizes.

  • 13.5% Acl. Clearly different than the gamey darker fruit's of the 90, & 92. This had more of a red fruit profile with brighter acidity. Interesting enough the finish isn't as long with the brighter acidity Ponzi's with red fruit characteristics. While the nose is much more explosive the balance is slightly over on the acid side. What was truly so amazing opening 6 vintages and sitting here in front of the computer tasting bottle after bottles while writting these notes is that there seems to be two distinct styles of the Pozni Reserve Pinot. It's either dark fruit with gamey notes and a lusher mouth / long finish (such as the 88. 90, & 92). Or it's brighter fruit, red fruit, explosive on the nose with a more austere palate and a briefer finish (like the 89, 91, 93). Ohh how I wish I had the perfect bottle with a balance of both styles. That was what that 1977 bottle of Ponzi once offered and what I will continue to search for.
