  • Extremely good offering from a supposedly terrible vintage. We'd stayed away from all 2002 Rhone's because of the reviews after the terrible weather during the growing season, but couldn't resist buying some Gaillard offerings after visiting the estate in Mallevale. And what a wonderful surprise. Sure this wasn't as big as one might expect from the Rhone, but it had a wonderful purple-ish colour, and definite nose of red berries and cassis. A medium body (probably on the light side of medium) revealed lots of fruit, fine balance (a hint of accidity providing a refreshing splash) and background notes of black peppercorns - and was that just a hint of mushroom lurking in the background. Definitely one to drink in the near term, it nonetheless was quite good.
