  • Really nice. Still some tannin and structure. Nice fruit. Good finish. Drink or hold.

  • Pleasantly surprised. Better than my precious bottle. Splash decanted, and let breathe in the decanter for nearly 3 hrs. Then drank over the next 2 hrs.

Visually, the wine is still very youthful, with barely a trace of bricking.

On the nose, the wine has delicious black and blue fruit. Sweet compote of blackberries and blueberrries.

The palate is in sync with nose. Oak and tannins well integrated - although fine, tannins are very clearly perceptible, typical of mountain fruit. Good acidity and minerality. No heat from alcohol (perhaps in part as a result of serving at cellar temp). Hints of leather and cedar.

If I had more, I would revisit on a yearly basis through 2023 or so.

  • Looks: still youthful for its age, slight bricking.

    Nose: Black fruits, cassis, tobacco.

Palate: In sync with nose. Oak and tannins well integrated. Good acidity and minerality. A touch of heat, but not too obtrusive.

I will revisit in 2 yrs. (Bought two bottles on the cheap in the secondary market. Great QPR, it turns out).

PS: Slow ox'd for 75 mins and drank over 3 hrs.

  • This bottle was the best out of the 18 bottles or so that I have downed so far...Elegant, lighter than other bottles, with near perfect acidity along the pleasing dry finish. Some hints of coffee starting to poke through this one...I love the suborn quality of the 2005 California crop. Unfolded for a good 3 hours into good places.

  • The austerity of Howell Mountain was just about eroded and tamed in this bottle, giving way to ripe plums in the front, followed by candy like red fruit at exit. Long finish with noticeable grip, but a bit of bitterness and excess wood that has always kept this wine from being craved.
