We have good news and bad news here. Bad news first, it is way overoaked. The good news is that there is enough fruit character and structure to handle it. In fact, this may be the most distinctive wine in the Private Selection Series. I have always thought that Syrah has the potential to give Cabernet Sauvignon a run for it's money as the prime red varietal, with fewer potential off flavors to interfere. This wine is really dark in color. The nose is rustic, oaky, and grapey. The palate is big, partially because of big oak, but also because this dark fruit is very concentrated, and completely out of character for what this wine costs. The fruit coats the top of the palate with ripe blackberries. The oak definitely affects our ability to taste all the characteristics this wine could show. The tannins are as smooth as in a wine 3 times this price. So, chew through the oak and enjoy. At this price, put 2 cases away.

Nicely affordable and widely available Syrah, with mixed berry and spice aromas and flavors. Not terribly distinctive but very drinkable.
