  Certainly now the oldest wine I’ve ever tried and by some miracle, still very much alive. I’ve had many, many bottles that were decades younger and so utterly oxidized as to be impotable.
  
  I was astonished that this not only drinkable but also incredibly enjoyable and fascinating, showing a vibrant perfumed nose of incense, truffles, hoisin sauce, rusted iron and even more surprising, a very delicate backdrop of red fruit leather still lingering.
  
  Not to say it wasn’t over-the-hill— it clearly was on the waning side of things — but still so striking and pleasant.
  
  Palate was less pleasing and had dissolved into something quite flabby with little structure to speak of, but what a treat to have tried something with so much to say after 50 years.

  At first, when you smell it, you think the fruit might be over-caramelized...but then it resolves somehow into something tight and sweet-smelling. On first taste, it seems too round...but then the acids swell up just enough to support it, highlighting a palate with savory flavors and a touch of smoke. This wine is in a good place.

  De precioso color rubí rojizo de capa media-baja, claro, translúcido. Reflejos anaranjados y cobrizos, refulgente. Sin asomo de precipitados, limpísimo. Borde amplio, atejado, con poca diferencia respecto al interior del menisco.
  
  Aromas de buena intensidad sacando una importante dosis inicial a ahumados, lácteos acompañada de un ligera pátina de vainilla, maderas cremosas y finas notas reductivas: cuero viejo, cuadra, corteza de nogal... Algo abultado y quizás en exceso extrovertido, lleno de especias dulces (nuez moscada, canela) y un rastro de notas maduras en las que se junta fruta escarchada, toffee, tabaco inglés, melaza, confitura de naranja amarga. Repleto de detalles, muy vistoso. Necesita tomar aire para ir aligerándose de tanto peso de origen. Saca un fondo vegetal a hinojo, anís, salvia, que dan paso a notas de flores marchitas y hojarasca.
  
  En boca es más liviano de lo esperado, sin llegar a ser diluido ni a restarle concentración. Fresco, limpio, apoyándose en una más que acertada acidez que da paso a un rastro de dulcedumbre de calidad. El conjunto está bien resuelto y funciona. Tiene unos taninos maduros, de calidad. En cosas ha gustado incluso más que el Gran Berceo de la misma cosecha. Aquí se demuestra el excelente trabajo de Luis Gurpegui Muga en sus primeros años en Berceo. Eran vinos caros sí, pero el tiempo les ha acabado dando la razón.

  80% tempranillo, 10% mazuelo, 10% graciano . 12% vol.
  - Uva procedente de viñedos propios y de pequeños productores de la Rioja Alta. Permanece durante 12 meses en grandes tinas de madera de roble para finalizar la fermentación maloláctica y reposar antes de pasar a criarse en barrica. El vino es trasegado y madura entre 24 y 30 meses en barricas de roble americano de 225 litros. Sometido a diversas trasiegas de forma periódica. Embotellado en envases de 70 cl. Un mínimo de 5 años de guarda en botellero en los viejos calados de la bodega, en la calle de las Cuevas en Haro, antes de ser comercializado.
