Sensational 4 years ago. Very dark without clarity. It has now peaked and has lost its youthful allure as a highly extracted Zin. Dried cherries, raisins, vanilla, and port notes dominate, not at all unpleasant, but the former sense of abundant bramble, zing, and cherry liqueur is gone and not compensated by any evolved elegance. Low acidity but some tannin. Enjoy and drink soon. 4+10+15+5.

Wow- this was a tasty Rockpile Zin- everything I wanted and more. Lots of lush fruit and in its prime drinking window. Good amount of oak, spice and pepper. For the $13 on auction I bought this for- this is my new QPR for the year and a top 5 Zin for this year.

(Valdez Family Zinfandel Botticelli Vineyard) Jeff Cohn is the winemaker for Ulises Valdez’s own label, but don’t expect anything Rosenblum-like here. This is a chiseled, elegantly scaled style of Zinfandel that nonetheless packs sweet concentrations of blackberry and boysenberry jam, along with smoky tobacco-leaf notes. The wine’s stony minerality is bolstered by fine-grained tannins, and despite its flexing of muscle and proportion (15.8% alcohol), the typical Rockpile acidity allows it to finish amazingly fresh and light on its feet. Appellation: Rockpile

A bit raisiny upon opening, but that seems to be dissipating. Quite good.
