2021 Martinborough weekend with Kai, Marion and friends (Wairarapa, NZ): Served double blind with the Terre Nere. Much darker colour. Black cherries and blackberries – quite dark fruited – with graphite, damson plums and dark floral perfumes. A couple of winemakers noted VA in the bouquet. A sleeker and more dark berried mouth than the Don Peppino. Elegant and seamless. Some development but still fairly primary. I did not guess at the 16 years age difference with the Don Peppino. Possibly it may drink even better from 2024+.

Medium weight, red, light red rim. Soft ripe red berries, damson, very refined spice. Incredibly silky, refined and yet with great flavour intensity. Absolutely seamless, dark and red fruits, violets, dark spice, all totally balanced with classy acidity. No real sign of oxidative development. Superb. Will last a decade easily.

Tasted blind – Sweet spices, sappy red cherry fruits and wood toast, 1er Cru weight and complexity with charming summer flowers, juicy earthy raspberry and elegant structure. Lovely sweet raspberry tannins and earth that reminds me of Chambolle Musigny. Young but less mellow than wine 1 (The 2002 Bonnes Mares). Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru? 2011/ 2008? (90/100)

Mature red cherry and berry with savory spice. An overall wonderfully balanced combination of fruit, earth, savory spice in harmony. Classy and elegant, with good weight and length. At its peak, this remained constant from when popped-and-poured through the next hour+ in glass. Drink through 2025.

(Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru) Tart red fruit nose; tasty tart red fruit with an herbal note, good acidity; medium finish 92+ pts.
(Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru) Just a little darker than the 2000 villages Chambolle. The nose is deeper, but significantly tighter. In the mouth, instantly lacier and spicier with an immense step-up in complexity - high-toned fruits invade the back of the palate. Late tannin grab with a really impressive length - I'd buy this in a shot.
(Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru) Roses and cherry nose; tasty, rose, cherry palate, surprisingly concentrated; medium finish 92+ pts.
