Seepage through the capsule. Gifted so no details on how it's been stored.
Pours with lively bubble that fade fairly quickly. Medium + gold colour.
The nose gave an immediate impression of lightly sweet oxidative sherry. However, it it still fairly fresh and attractive. Honey and biscuits.
On the palate it shows sweet notes of honey, biscuit, with mushroom-fungal notes coming to fore on the finish. A hint of bitterness shows that all is not 100% but this doesn't dominate.
This was a wonderful surprise for a bottle I was expecting to be dead. It's an old wine, certainly fully developed and shouldn't be kept longer, but I found this to be quite delicious.

An evening with Laurent-Perrier (Connaught Hotel, London): Mid gold. A lovely complex nose with some maderisation becoming more evident than in the 88. The nose is dominated by dried apricots and a touch of eau de vie de mirabelle. This is a wine that's completely together. Lots of gorgeous ripe-flavoured fruit, yet very well balanced. Lots of peach and apricot on the palate. Massive length. Very impressive. Excellent ... almost heavenly.

Bibendum Laurent Perrier Champagne tasting and dinner (Connaught Hotel, London): Mid gold. Best of the 80s vintages tasted in the flight (88, 85 and 82). Still showing some honeyed, fruit notes alongisde the classic yeasty nuttiness. A touch of madeirisation evident, but nowhere near the extent of the 82. Great length.

This punches above its weight! Very pleasant sweetness with classic fudge. Fat, juicy and lovely.
