  • I've purchased a few of these from CSW, and although the first bottle (consumed in '08) was the best, all of these have been worthwhile. It has the depth, power and bit of botrytis glaze that is associated with Hirtzberger. The Gruner and Riesling get most of the attention, but I've always had a soft spot for the Neuberger and the Burgunders (Weiss, Grau), although I would drink the latter three earlier on.

  • At first this appeared oxidized and I was about to pour it out, it was a deep yellow color and had a slight burned caramel nose and taste. But I decided to just let it sit in the bottle opened and came back to it an hour later. I am glad I did not pour it out as it picked up some character and complexity. It became more waxy and had hints of lemon and cream with an almost petrol like quality. Nothing mind shattering, but an interesting wine for sure. Would be good to drink with a hard cheese, nuts and a maybe little honey - it really does need some food. I really have no idea how long this will age for. The slightly oxidized nose and color lead me to believe that probably this wine should be drunk sooner rather than later. And it does get better with some air, so don't be put off by the initial flavor and put it aside for a bit and come back to it. Decent stuff.
