  • A blend of Fiano (90%) and Greco (10%), aged for 6 months in oak tonneaux. 13,5% alcohol. Total production 20,000 bottles. Served blind.

Luminous golden yellow color, tending towards pale amber. Beautiful, complex and well-developed nose with rich, layered aromas of mature smoky nuances, tangerine peel, honey, some resin, a little bit of rowanberry marmalade and a hint of dried apricots. There is so much character just in the nose of the wine that you are in no hurry to taste it - you just want to savor the aroma. The wine is concentrated, full-bodied and quite oily on the palate with rather modest acidity, making the wine feel a bit heavy and clumsy. However, these qualities are redeemed by the fascinating flavors of honeydew melon, apple jam, complex creaminess, a little bit of stony minerality and hints of dried apricots and Nivea hand cream (meaning that the wine tastes just how the hand cream smells like). Although dry, the rich and concentrated nuances make the wine feel like it is almost a bit sweet. The finish is very concentrated and even a bit robust with complex, layered flavors of sweet honeydew melon, lovely creaminess, some dried apricots, a little bit of orange zest and a hint of toasty oak spice.

A really impressive and captivating Southern Italian white; Stylistically this feels like a richer and weightier take on aged white Bordeaux. Lovely as it was, I couldn't help but hope for a bit higher acidity, as the wine lacked some freshness and good backbone - although there was still some balance to the wine and it didn't taste flabby. Fortunately there was enough depth and complexity to the wine you really couldn't pine much about the modest acidity. All in all, this is just stunning stuff. I really can't see the wine developing anywhere here but down, so better to start popping up any remaining bottles; you want to taste this wine while it is still at the top! Highly recommended.

  • Less good than my previous note in September 2014. Perhaps a less sound bottle or 18 months ageing has had its effect. 87 now and while fine and rich with appropriate food, time to drink up.......

  • Feudi di San Gregorio top white - Fiano and Greco di Tufo. At 13 years of age luminous yellow, but with enough acidity to support richness and remarkable length. Delicious. A real triumph.
