Osechi at Naoki Sushi (Chicago, IL): Holy shit. I've always pooh-poohed the 2003 vintage for being overripe and the wines low in acidity, but this is a textbook case of a producer trumping the vintage. And we're not talking some lame ruff-and-sluff here, this is some serious play drawing out the singleton king. Brilliant. Smoky, with broad white fruit, tons of flint and gunsmoke. There's just enough acidity here to keep this going, and if served blind, I would never have pegged this for a 2003 as it has none of that stereotypical overripeness or flabbiness. A classic, proper steely chardonnay of the best kind.

Dinner at La Chassagne (La Chassagne, Chassagne Montrachet): Definately riper on th enose. Not as flabby as one might have feared, but it does lack precision and focus. Works well with slabs of foie gras and foie gras creme brulee though. Just a shade hot and bothered on the finish. **1/2

Quite frankly disappointing. Nose is pretty flat and uninteresting. Body is quite thin and there is an unintegrated finish that drinks like cheap california wine. There are definitely better options available for the price.

A little slow to develop in the glass, it peaked after about 30 mimutes (decanted). Moderately long finish, well-focused fruit and good acid.
