  • From a 375, my last bottle. Deep reddish-orange, almost tawny; nose is highly aromatic, almost cedar, orange marmalade, coffee beans; palate is rich and unctuous, full bodied, medium sweetness, medium acidity, some fading orange fruit; short-medium finish. Enjoyable, but the drop-off in length (on the palate and finish) from a year ago is noticeable, and this appears to be on the downslope. My last bottle, and drink up if you have any! 91-

  • Fioranos and Great Bottles (Tim's, SF): ‘acininobili’ - noble berries.
    85% vespaiola, 10% tocai, 5% garganega
Dried botrytized grapes were hand-selected, fermented in temp-controlled tanks, and aged in new French barriques for two years.

Moderate plus concentration amber, with hints of red and copper.
The nose is oxidative, figgy with dried apricot, prunes, and balsamic. Oxidative but not raisinated.
    Medium body, moderate alcohol (13%).
    Sweet. This has Sauternes-level RS - maybe 200-250 g/L? (probably correct - the 1999 had 210 g/l).

Herbal and savory on the finish - dried tomato and tomato leaf.

This is pretty unique - a very special bottle to taste. That said, I don’t quite understand why it’s oxidative, and why botrytis and oak aren’t apparent. I’m not able to connect the process to the taste in the glass.

    Score: Around 9.

  • Fiorano and Great Bottles Dinner (Tim and Elliott's Place, San Francisco): From a 375. Deep reddish-orange; aromatic nose with orange mamalade, caramel, coffee, balsamic vinegar; palate is full bodied, sweet, medium-plus acidity, overall comes across unctuous with plenty of orange marmalade fruit, figs, excellent depth, fades only a tad through the finish; clean medium length finish. A superb sweet wine, interesting and with great complexity, at peak, lacking only just a bit of persistence. 93-94

  • From 375. Coravin 6/1/14: Deep orange-tawny color; intense nose with dense ice-wine purity of orange marmalade, slight burnt caramel, slight coffee, fabulous complexity to the nose though it does start to fade just a tad with extensive swirling or a deep sniff; palate is full bodied, extraordinary purity of orange marmalade fruit, has significant sweetness but great acidity to give it freshness, some slight raisined notes of maturity, fades a tad through the midpalate; finish is short-medium. I think this is holding up well and supremely enjoyable, but the hundreds of sweet wines I've tasted since my last half give me the perspective to identify the lack of persistence on the nose and palate that drops my score a point or two, though I don't think the wine has changed substantially. At peak maturity, and my assessment of its life hasn't changed (will drink my last two halves in the next 2-4 years). I think the wine will hold for a few more years but will not improve. 93
6/4/14: Finished today. Just a joy to drink, and so complex. 93-94 today.

  • Wonderfully mature. Orange caramel color. Nose of raisins, orange marmalade. The palate is really where this wine shines. Great fruit with lots of smooth texture. Impeccably balanced with GREAT acidity on the finish. Lingering finish that actually doesn't coat your mouth with a syrup texture, which is lovely. Ready to drink now, but probably has at least a few years.
Update: Finally finished the half bottle today on 4/12, day 7. The wine held on well for the first 3-4 days, then dropped in quality just a bit as the nose became slightly less fruity and the palate got a little more flat. I think the wine is wonderfully mature now and will show well for the next 3-5 years, and then will probably start declining in quality. I have 3 more and will open up one every 1-2 years to fully enjoy. Incredible wine.
