  • I tend to drink white wine fairly young, but I was told that many Meursaults benefit from aging. Thus I tried this vintage 2000 bottle of wine. It was OK, but I did not find it appreciably different from younger and less expensive similar wines. The color was golden yellow. There were no signs of premature oxidation. There was a slight floral bouquet. The wine was fruit forward with what I thought was an unobtrusive oak background. The wine was very dry, with a touch of residual sugar. I would call it austere but pleasant. It was a very nice wine but nothing that lets it stand out from the many younger Meursaults that I have enjoyed.

  • Gagnaire -- Champagne, Burgs, Alsace (Pierre Gagnaire Tokyo): Another wine that is very rich in color and even seems a bit viscous in the glass. At first, the nose shows pure apple fruit with a little hint of green apple tartness, some citrus peel, and an undefined waxy richness. The palate is very full, even big, with slightly honeyed pear, apple, and more citrus. Only with time does any of the Gouttes d’Or minerality come out. Unfortunately, time also brings out some heat on the nose and in the finish. The longer this sits, the more it picks up a nice bit of mineral, but it never sheds its bit of heat. An enjoyable drink, ripe rich fruit with a mineral backbone, but not quite in balance.

(Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault Gouttes d'Or) Slightly more new oak than the Genevrières. Nose is fairly subdued with faint toast. Sweet palate is a little more buttery, perhaps honey too. Not obviously oaky. Nice acidity with reasonable length. A very nice wine.
