  • The wine shows depth in color
In the nose the wine is still utterly youthful (if given blind, I'd call this Barossa shiraz), the wine shows ripe but not jammy (by any means) fruit, black cherry, black currant, prunes, plums, black raisin, smoky, reductive notes, toast, smoked/wood fire notes
In the palate, the wine shows again strength, smoky again, dried black fruit, a few balsamic notes, medium to full body, a bunch of tannins, acidity trying to keep the balance, raisin notes, earthy, black spices, dense oak frame, medium finish.
Took everyone by surprise, amazing perfomance

  • Dark garnet with tawny rim. This was a remarkable fully developed wine that had a cloud of off aromas which hindered the experience like vinyl or nail varnish. The wine was not undrinkable, on the contrary it was immensely pleasurable but with a small fault in the nose. The good aromas were of dark fruit and sweet spice. Almost full bodied, nice texture in the mouth and ample taste. This bottle was not the regular Metochi from Tsantalis winery but some special bottling called Private Collection of which I have seen only from the 1998 vintage. I would surely try another bottle with the hope that the fawlty aromas belonged only to the particular bottle we tasted.
