I kept on going back and forth between Crozes Alberic Bouvet and the Saint Joseph Andre Pealat - this one is significantly more expensive. Both very well made wines. The Alberic shows more animal and game, but isn't rustic or hard edged, just wonderfully smoking and with great depth. The Andre is even deeper, tending towards the fruitier spectrum of syrah (bearing in mind that this is the northern rhone and not Barossa). Or, to put the style another way, when the wine maker and I got to talking he collects and cellars Tempier Bandol but finds Pradeaux (sp?) just a bit to rustic. If I had to choose the Alberic was my favorite, simply based on price.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Very tight, feels underripe, cranberries, red currants, drying bitters, lacks charm. Is it just this bottle?
