  • Deep ruby with brick rim, transparent appearance. This time around, the nose is initially overly lactic, with buttery and butterscotch notes. Luckily, these impressions fade somewhat and integrate to the better with time and air. Overall, the nose is fully mature with notes of liquorice, thyme, lilacs, cooked strawberries and blackberries, plus a whiff of vanilla oak. With Graillot's '05 in the other glass, this wine has softer acidity, smoother tannins and a creamier texture. The flavours are pretty intense though, if not as complex, nor as expressive or extremely typical as those of Graillot's. The long, peppery finish reveals another half a degree of alcohol. The smoothness makes for pleasurable drinking, but we don't see this getting any better now, and the initial criticism stands. Bottle variation?

  • Slightly reductive when decanted, not at all stinky, but in need of air - raw meat, pepper and thyme on the nose, among other black-fruity impressions. Medium-bodied taste with high acidity, sinewy tannin build and firm resistance, meaty and peppery. Still quite youthful, still on its way up. No hurry, these bottles will keep and develop for several years. Really good with lamb-chops and black olives/feta cheese pie.

  • Still closed after two hours of air, opens slowly in the glass. Deep, dark, sophisticated, complex nose with aromas of tar, leather, liquorice, black olives, blackberries and plum. The midweight palate is surprisingly big and intense, perhaps slightly alcoholic (although only 13,5%), with pronounced acidity and well-knit syrah fruit core. Really long aftertaste. Surely this one is for laying down.
