I found this Zinfandel in my cellar and opened to celebrate my recent visit to Martinelli last week. Nose of black cherry fruit, forest floor, and allspice, more of the same on the palate, mouth filling fruit, big body, showing its age, perhaps a little on the downhill side, tasty, better 5 years ago, but still nice Zinfandel, and a medium/long finish.

Mike Grammer comes to town (Galletto Ristorante, Modesto Ca.): Monster Zin here…still going strong! 17.5 alc…..pretty much like drinking a Port here…but not too sweet, which I really like! Little fume…but holds it well……teeth staining purple plum blackberry liqueured fruit…..some aged leather, dusty woods, spice box…rich and voluptuous with some aged complexities….a nice after dinner sipper!

Time for dinner, BBQ turkey sausages, gold, orange, and red peppers, and a big Portobello mushroom. I went to the cellar and pulled a bottle of my favorite zinfandel. The color is deep and dark plum red in the glass. Nose of ripe, fruity, black cherries with hints of earth and spice, more of the same on the palate, tannins fully resolved, just luscious black cherry fruit that is almost syrupy, medium finish, terrific zinfandel.

Pleasant surprise. Lots of fruit. Good legs and nose. Expiration date way too pessimistic. While a little brown, clearly still a fine zin.
