Simply stunning aged Barolo. Bright and punchy nose of raspberry, cherry, decaying rose and balsamic. There’s some leather and tar savoury elements. It I deep and heady, with some Indian spice and still plenty of chew to the long finish.

Pours out a light colour but it looks very much alive and it glistens. The nose shows some mushroom and truffle at first and breathes up beautifully with air. There are notes of leather, smoked meats, decaying rose, damp earth and Indian spice. The palate is very savoury, complex and ethereal. It has a meaty sweetness and plenty of flora. Flavours envelop the whole mouth and it has an airy feel coupled with superb intensity and persistence. Structural elements are in complete harmony with the rest of the wine and it is a thing of great beauty.

Cantina (Bartolo) Mascarello Dinner: The Barolos of Giulio and Bartolo Mascarello 1952-1971 (Bar Boulud, NYC): Bricked, pale ruby. Rich, full nose of cafe au lait, leather, mellow nutmeg, chestnuts; most warm and inviting. Palate similar, nicely balanced and a little reserved, a hint of flint; maple syrup. Pure comfort. Heavenly and absolutely delicious. Long. A pleasing herbal note showed up on the nose very late. What a bottle of wine!

Tertiary characters of teak, truffle, leather and spice. It has a good acid spine and plenty of earthy/soil traits. It is rich and long.
