2006 Summa Reserva single vineyard (12 hectares) Rioja by Bodegas Olarra. A relatively new bodega founded in 1973 perhaps most known for it's classic Cerro Añon as well as being located in a cathedral giving it it's nickname, the Cathedral of Rioja. This reserva shows excellent balance as well as that Riojan interplay between savory and sweet with some delicious dark berries present as well. It shows proper structure and good length. It overperforms easily for 16.00 and delivers Spanish value and quality in spades.

Double decanted about an hour before serving. Somewhat fruit forward Rioja with more dark fruit (black plums, blackberries), cedar, spices, and moderate soft tannins hidden by the fruit in the mid-range. Opened up a bit during the evening and look forward to trying the remainder of the bottle today.

(At Salinas - NYC) A big, bold and silky Rioja. Fruit forward with substantial texture and coffee notes. I liked it but not as much as other recent Rioja's – it seemed much less distinctive – I never would have been able to identify it. Will be interesting to see how it ages. (89)
