Community Tasting Notes (8) Avg Score: 93.7 points

  • Medium gold. Pronounced sherried aromas of orange peel, seville orange marmalade, vanilla, and toasty butterscotch. Dry marmalade fruit on the palate, quite strict, high acids, medium body, low alcohol, long finish with some toasty vanilla aromatic back notes. Interesting balance between the complexity of the nose and the single mindedness of the palate. More intellectual than pleasing at this stage of its development, so its a bit hard to rate. I could anywhere from 89 to 93 depending on the perspective taken, so I guess I’ll say 91. 13% alcohol. [I have one bottle of this left and For Science I am going to leave it for another 10 years. Stay tuned.]

  • Sherried nose of beeswax and walnuts with a reserved hint of fruit. Powerful salty fruit on the front of the palate, notes of honey and anise on the middle, bright acids almost dominating the fruit at the back. Not an easy wine, fascinating, intellectual, difficult to think of a food pairing, perhaps an exquisite Spanish tapa would serve.

  • Nuts, wizened apples, a hint of mellow oak with a touch of cumin on the sherried nose. Smooth unctuous fruit on the palate with a poised weightiness, a lemon candy note at the back on the very long twinkling finish. Lovely aperitif on a warm November evening in Tucson.

  • Deep golden yellow. Initially shy nose that opens up with sherried aromas of lemon, honeysuckle, brown sugar, and pie crust. Smooth and full bodied on the palate with a deep acid-lined progression to an everlasting fruit-driven finish. Extraordinary grace and balance. 50 + 17 + 18 + 9 = 94.

  • Elegant creamy mineral aroma with warm citrus notes, a touch of sandalwood, and a lovely top note of asafoeteda. Fresh crystalline fruit on the palate, with excellent focus and drive and a very long echoing acid finish. A moving wine of great complexity and grace. 50 + 18 + 18 + 9 = 95.
