  • Consistent with previous note 2 years ago - the wine has barely moved. Still plenty of wood spices and oak here joining the rich dark fruit. I would think this must have been at least 70% new barrels, unfortunately the Chateau does not provide the same kind of detailed production information as for the Grand Vin.
Would wait another two years, but have my doubts that the fruit of a second wine can absorb this amount of oak.... Interestingly enough the Chateau suggested a drinking window of 2012-2017 at bottling...

  • Poured like a cab or merlot in the glass ... looked beautiful. After aeration and swirling I was expecting ... well let's just say that the nose didn't deliver what I remember tasting in the tasting room and then didn't deliver on the palate. The fruit was muted and earth and tannins came through. For the price, this was quite disappointing.

  • Given my recent mixed experience with pnp 2010/2009 Bordeaux (great 2010 Giscours, very good 2009 Giscours but rather unpleasant 2009 Les Hauts de Pontet), was curious to try this second wine from Smith Haut Lafitte. Pnp. Dark garnet to the rim. Plenty of wood spices and dark fruit on the relatively subtle nose. On the palate this wine is still showing very youthful and is showing (too) much of (almost) everything: dark fruit, oak and wood spices, some heat/noticeable alcohol (14.5%...). While elements of the wine remind me of Southern Rhone, the wine has more structure and clearly more typicity than the recent disappointing 09 Hauts de Pontet. Tannins continue to be covered by the rich fruit and the wine is accessible and open without proper decant. Fairly short finish. Will give the rest of the bottle a decant and see if it improves.
Would give these bottles another 3-4 years as they should improve and integrate but doubt this will ever be a great Bordeaux. Would have the 2011 Grand Vin over this second wine from the much better 2010 vintage anytime. 88+
