Stored in cool Whistler cellar less than 45 degrees F and part of a vertical tasting of Engel Clos Vougeot. Dark red with sun dried cherry with a slap of miso on the nose. Chelan cherry palate expanding on the back end with a brush of sheep leather on the very long finish. Impressive showing, and an outstanding Grands Echezeaux that will improve over 15 years…at least. Now-2042

Dark ruby in the glass. Nose takes half an hour to turn on but is highly detailed, elegant, spicy, firmly secondary looking tertiary, olive, pine, drying cherry, oregano. Kemo Sabe nailed it in 2017 in that this does smell like old Barolo. Hitting higher notes an hour in, softening and lightening up. Roasty red tomato in a Rouget sort of style. Palate is still well endowed and holding onto strong dark red fruit. Great looking bottle but have to imagine this is about peak. Detailed and complicated, does not obviously hit you over the head with straighforwad excellence, really makes you look, but there is a lot here. Last pour seems to be the prettiest. Very cool.
Beautiful, soulful wine. Incredible velvety texture. Wonderful reflection of the richness of the year but with a lightness in body and style that only masters like Engel achieve. Lacking a bit of definition in the midpalate.

The nose could have been mistaken for old Barolo (of which I am a huge fan). Total balance in this wine. Integrated. Just singing. Nose is quite nice and coming at you from the glass. Classic Burgundy character in this wine.

RE dinner. Smoky, touch brown aromatics. Not my favorite smells. (2188/2500)
