Meaty on the nose, liquorice. Quite tannic, relatively dry mouthfeel as a result. Ripe dark fruit. Deep and savoury, without the aromatic fireworks of some of the other wines this evening.

Misunderstood. Perhaps I'm a member of a small club, but I don't understand the BH disdain for RE. I find the wines to be among the most consistently interesting, tasty and satisfying I know. I buy all that I can (afford) and all the wise drinkers I know do the same. This wine takes time to unwind, but at 90 minutes finds its equilibrium...very subtly, but with little downside. Show patience and willingness and this can be a memorable wine. A magnum.

In the glas: beautiful transparency with deep coloring, somewhat lighter than the 1994. No fading. bouquet: a bit floral blend with aged fruit. Fine and perfect balance. taste: The wine developed enormously in the glas. Hints of ripe apple/pear with very light chocolate. Perfect acidity balance. The wine rolled around the tongue as if it were a duvet of grape.

Rene Engel dinner at Les Amis. To me, this was mildly corked, and to be fair, it would not be right to rate it. Very deep colored, with a strong herbaceous and violet like nose, with good intensity and ripeness. Blueberries, raspberries and pomegranate, but I really couldn't get pass the mustiness and dry wood on the nose. Good structure on the palate, fruits were there initially, but faded after 2 hours. It's a shame that this just wasn't a good bottle.

Burgundies with James Handford (South Kensington): Deep and healthy looking, but one could smell the tannin on the nose. A decent amount of sweet pinot fruit. But it's simple. And very grippy. it's just about approachable today, but it needs to shed those tannins for it to be properly enjoyable.

(Engel René Grands-Echézeaux) Deep colour. Nose has quite primary small berry fruit. Good acidity and quite grainy tannins. Lovely depth, I wouldn't suggest trying another for at least 3 years. Very good.
