  • This wine differs heavily from the traditional Muscadet in that the grapes for this wine are picked only when fully ripe, whereas the grapes normally used for Muscadet are picked when barely ripe. The wine is fermented with natural yeasts for wany long (occassionally even 3-4 months), after which the wine is aged sur lie for some 6 more months. The wine is not fined, filtered, chaptalized or acidised. Annual production of some 3,000 bottles.

Pale and limpid, almost neutral pale green color. Extremely characterful, complex and thrilling nose of honey, aromatic white flowers, ripe grape aromas, some spice and a powerful streak of Bretagne's rustic apple cider. The wine has a dry and refreshing palate in the style of Muscadet, but with such richness and concentration it knocks you right off your feet. Very ripe flavors of honey, sweet apple, rustic countyside cider, stony minerality, some tangerine citrus fruits, a bit of bitter grapefruit pith and a hint of white currant. Racy acidity and intensity give a lovely counterpoint to the rather full body, making the wine come across very lively and structured, instead of heavy and fat. Crisp, bitter and extremely persistent finish with flavors of chalky minerality, ground green herbs, tart citrus fruits, salinity, some honey, a bit of leesy spiciness and a hint of wild real cider. The aftertaste is extremely tasty, moreish and refreshing.

So very unlike a traditional Muscadet (which is a style I really love), yet utterly delicious and enthralling. A fascinating combination of concentrated richness and mineral, structured freshness. Lots of acidity, minerality and salinity yet not without rich, honeyed and very ripe Muscadet fruit. So this is what Melon de Bourgogne actually tastes like when fully ripe? Oh wow. The wine is like Muhammad Ali - floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee. Extremely recommended, shows incredible value at 10€.

  • I'm a big fan of Muscadet from Loire. Color: cloudy with a little spritz action going on. Nose: Citrus and green apple with some salinity coming through. Palate: A bit off. I usually like the nice minerality and salinity from Loire Muscadet but this seemed a bit much. It was almost salty and metallic in my mouth in a weird way. The bottle was still drinkable but it was missing the usual freshness that I expect.
I would actually like to try another bottle of the wine as I think this was just an off bottle.
