  • WSET Level 3 Class. Tasted blind.

Clear, medium-intensity lemon color. Clean, medium(+)-intensity, developing nose, with aromas of honey, acacia, clove, mango, and melon. Dry on the palate, with medium acid, medium(+) body, medium alcohol, medium(+) intensity, and flavors of honey, clove, melon, and mango. Medium(+) finish. Very good, can drink now, but with potential for further development, high-priced.

  • A single vineyard Pinot Gris from a specific "Les Allouettes" plot located in the Lerchenberg vineyard.

Quite neutral pale green color. The aromas are typical of Alsatian Pinot Gris, but instead of being rich, sweet and heavy, they are surprisingly dry, fresh and bright; there are notes of honey, honeydew melon, some spice and nuances of exotic fruits - but delivered in a very dry and bright fashion. On the palate the wine is very intense and bone-dry with remarkable, racy acidity for Pinot Gris. Really fresh and intense flavors of spice, lemony citrus fruits, some honeyydew melon and stony minerality. Very austere and unforgiving in style. Bright, dry and well-defined finish with powerful but somewhat austere flavors of stony minerality, lemony citrus fruits and hints of beeswax.

Atypically intense, powerful and characterful Pinot Gris that doesn't easily fit the picture I have of Alsatian Pinot Gris wines: this wine combines the bright freshness of Italian Pinot Grigios with the power and depth of the best Alsatian Pinot Gris wines. Furhtermore, judging by its acidity, it would have been easier to pick out this wine as a Riesling, not a Pinot Gris! Truly a remarkable wine with great structure, focus and complexity. Might need some years in the cellar, just to let the tightly wound structure resolve a little bit and the austere fruit pick up some tertiary notes. Really attractive example of Pinot Gris and easily one of my favorites among Alsatian Pinot Gris wines. Very good value at ~18€.
