  • Inky crimson with browning edges. I was expecting a full-bodied monolithic southern Italian wine, so imagine my surprise. Opens with expressive notes of stewed dark fruits, leather, clove, juniper berries. After a few hours this expands to include eucalyptus, minty and floral notes. The palate carries notes of prune, raisins and woody spices, but it is remarkably light on its feet with pert acidity, rounded tannins and a moreish medium-bodied finish. At its peak but should hold for 5+ and develop additional tertiary character. 92+

  • PnP, then drunk over four days. At day two compared to the Riserva of the same vintage and of 2006. This was very nice from the get go and on its own very enjoyable and wonderful overall. But compared to the Riservas it did show a little more fruit sweetness and roundness rather than the firmer, more compact structure of the other two. The nose showed cherries, spices and a bit of tar. On the palate it has weight and structure but it is also fresh and lean. Good tannic grip on the finish, with a mineral, almost ferrous core. Somewhat easier drinking than the Riservas but not much. This also showed some orange hues on the rims. So it may be closer to maturity and with a somewhat shorter life, but who knows. Very nice nonetheless.

  • PnP at A16. Delightful; drinking window open, but just. 14%
