With braised lamb shanks with an interesting amalgam of spices (nutmeg, paprika, cinnamon) and herbs (rosemary, thyme), a recipe from a Lebanese chef. I like PS with rich, gamy meals, so often pair it with lamb. Following up on my friend EMark's comment, this could still benefit from laying down. The tannins are still huge, but they soften after a few hours. Behind that there's dark chocolate, black plums, a big aroma of fruit blossoms and wet earth. This is old school PS, but they won't be making it in future vintages, I'm told, but making a blended wine from the same vineyards. My guess is production numbers were too low to make it practical. Too bad. I'll hold the remaining vintages and see what happens in 10 years or so.

Dark plum color. Very rich nose. Rich black raspberry and chocolate on the tip of the tongue. Very pleasant stone fruit—plum—on the rear palate. Understandably, still some very noticeable tannins. Although, I think this youngster is really quite elegant. On the other hand, I think that this one can lay on its side and improve for many years.

We were considering joining the Mauritson Rockpile wine club, and we weren't sure if we were dazzled by the amazing staff at the winery, or truly loved their wine. This was an complete time warp back to Napa Valley and that amazing rich, earthy, juicy, perfectly complex wine. We joined the wine club while we were drinking it.
