Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy, Esmonin (Overgaauw Wine Estate): (Tasted Blind): A light ruby hue with a delicate orange rim suggests slight development. An intense nose that has some oaky nuances and marmite tones on first whiff but yields to red cherry, black raspberry and strawberries, whilst there is an almost violet element in the background with some rock scree. Enjoyable! The palate starts plumper with a fleshy core filled with a wealth of fruits, noting black raspberry, black plum, wild strawberry and stony qualities. There is some oak spice nicely integrated, lending further complexity. The powdery texture leads to finessed tannins with generous alcohol support, as does a mineral-edged acidity that ushers in a long and succulent farewell. Complex with excellent fruit depth, the wine is of high quality, and I enjoyed its clear ripeness from the vintage but it managed to hold its elegance, almost giving a cooling relief on the finish.

Wines with Larry, Huw and Paul in Martinborough: Slow-oed for three hours. Colour very primary deep purple/red. A gorgeous Gevrey nose of dark fruit, earth and some underbrush, with a touch of liquorice. All of the tasters were suggesting that this was a New World wine. On palate this was very bright, polished and satiny. I wanted to taste this wine to get an early sighter of its quality. However, it is presently drinking close to a barrel sample. The wine shows it has all of the components for a great future. It has a serious Grand Cru level of dry extract, very ripe, suave tannins and an excellent acid structure. At the moment of course it is sitting on its fruit and it really needs another ten years cellar time. Andrew observed that it was perhaps stereotypical good 2012 red Burgundy showing a pleasing combination of 2009 fruit with 2010 structure. As Mike says there is the potential here that this wine may be the best yet produced by Frederic Esmonin.

Possibly the best F Esmonin to date. Silky Musigny like tannins build on impressive primary fruit with reserved power, a little awkward due to its obvious unresolved youth.

This embodies my view of the 2012 vintage. It has everything. Intriguing fruit, refreshing acidity and transparency. Everything in perfect balance.
