  • Really disappointing showing - reticent on the nose, definite bricking and the fruit is gone and what remains is drying tannins - really not much going on of any interest - pass

  • Just straight up wonderful. This is pure class. Great acidity. Very fresh. Lots of red fruits. A bit more depth than the standard 2013 that we had right before this. It was really wonderful. Pretty wine.

  • My score / preference for this wine was lower than the Somm of the wines tasted that night.

3 hour decant. Still infanticide. I got bright purple fruit on the open that softened to dark purple over time. Tannins not super soft, and even slightly rustic; to be clear not aggressive, but rougher than expected. Still a balanced wine with elegance. If tannins integrated/softened up, and fruit opened up... would score it higher... would definitely wait a few years on the tannin softening at least.

  • To this day I kick myself for not getting into Roagna sooner. The '08 Pira V.V. is so beautiful tonight. The nose showed dark earth with savory herbs up front. Crushed cherry, exotic spices and dusty cedar followed. On the palate, it was zesty with mineral encased tart cherry and hints of dried citrus. Drinking impossibly well, yet still tannic, Roagna did a fantastic job in '08. It finished long yet fresh, and I'm sure there are decades of evolution to look forward to.

  • Appearance: Bright and clear, it has light ruby color, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of redcurrant, raspberry and cherries, floral notes of violet, mineral notes of earth, maturity notes of savory and truffle, oak notes of smoke, pungent spice of licorice. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with high acidity, high tannin of ripe and velvety texture, the wine has medium (+) alcohol, full body and medium (+) intensity flavors of red fruit of raspberry, cherries and plum, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of clove, maturity notes of savory. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Barolo with an intense nose showing highly complex characters, even though it is still fairly young there are plenty of different notes you can find on the nose. The wine has a robust structure, showing good concentration and the typical tannic style, plus a very long finish. It is ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years.
