  • Past its prime but showing reasonable fruit, a bit musty, monolithic

  • Very medicinal/cough syrupy nose, eucalyptus. Still full-bodied and tastes so much like that childhood Dimetap cough syrup. Quite rich, but with zingy acidity (gives it a bit of a sweet and sour vibe), this is certainly past it's prime, but still drinking. 88

  • Fantastic wine, although it was not in the same league as the Grand Merlot 1998 from James Irvine the same night. Balanced between blackberry and blueberry flavors, with sweet spice and cigar box tones.

  • My son stopped by last night for BBQ and this was his choice to pair with pulled pork, sweet potato fries and corn bread. A great match.

Color: Dark purple, all the way to the rim
Nose: Huge nose - red and black berries

It's too long ago to recall what I might have paid for these (this was the last of the lot), but I'm hard pressed to think of a more reliable value at this price point. The CT window tops out at 2012, but this bottle was in perfect form and I have no reason to think it wouldn't have been equally fine several years from now. Loads of fruit here, tannins are in the background but not overbearing and there's enough acid to keep everything in place. It's not the most profound bottle of wine, but on a casual Saturday night with your family, it's just right. Wish I had more...

  • Saturday Aged Syrah (Blind) (My Place): Blind wine #7 of 8. Raisin notes. Fully integrated wine with noticeable bricking/browning. Medium bodied. Others picked up notes of pine on the nose. This was the easiest wine for me to identify.....I knew it was an old Aussie shiraz. That being said, I thought it was a year or two past its prime and could have been even better than it already was. Drink now.

    My 90. Group's #2 of 8.
