  • Auzone Brunello vs Nebbiolo (MK) #1:

Highest vineyard in Montalcino, over 600m. 50+ years old vines.

Ruby with orange rim. Red berries, soil, brown sugar, iron, tar, anise, bakelite and black tea on the nose. Some burnt notes, oily feeling.

Cool opening on the palate, a little clumbsy on the midpalate, dry tannins, some heat in the finish (warm vintage), red cherries, velevety, juicy but clean and pretty.

Medium quality bottle, think this can do better.

  • Served along side the 2004 Ornellaia, this was my preferred of the two. From the color and nose, to the lightly tart, very fresh palate that showed the kind of tannic spine I enjoy when matched to proper ripeness and acidity. This was something of a surprise for me, I thought it would be a little heavier, less energetic. I'm glad I was proven wrong in my preconception, this was most enjoyable and a great example of what was possible in the region during a less than ideal vintage. Bravo! recommended

    Audozed 2 hours, served non-blind.

  • Le Ragnaie visit (Le Ragnaie, Montalcino): transparent red-brown, delicate cherries aroma & flavours, dried fruits, tart flavours, firm tannins, complex, well balanced, long tannic finish.

  • Favourite Brunello this evening [Justerini Italian wine tasting event Sep 1, London].
The Vecchie Vigne cuvee is clearly superior to the ordinary Brunello from Le Ragnaie.

  • The nose was pretty, not overdone, just perfectly refined with floral perfumes, small red berries and hints of animal musk. On the palate, I found silky textures, which were accentuated by focused red fruits, hints of spice and juicy acidity. The wine’s structural components shined through on the finish, along with a note of concentrated red fruit. The V.V. from Le Ragnaie is a selection of the best fruit from older vines, and it has a truly regal and refined personality.
