  • Drank over two nights, with and without food. Color is very dark ruby. Initial nose is very potent, jumps right out of the bottle when you pop the cork. It has a Cameron-esque "funk" thing going on, very interesting. Additionally, there's ripe cherries, musky animale and loamy earth on the nose, and just the faintest hint of oxidation on the very fringes. It would appear most of the action is on the nose as the initial palate is on the weak side. Yet, after lots of air the mid palate blossoms into a medium to full bodied wine which opens up nicely and gives decent action. However, the back palate seems a little flat and lifeless. The fruit is fading and a little flabby, and the tannins are a little too coarse. Finish is a little one-dimensional. Seeing that all the other tasting notes are five years old, perhaps this bottle is a tad over the hill. Oh well, even though I beat up on it, it's still a drinkable bottle.

  • This week I've had the 98 and 99 Beaux Freres. This held its own. On the 2nd day it gained some weight and complexity.

  • Christmas dinner wine at home with Fu after we put the kids down. Drank most of the bottle over the course of the evening as we watched Foyle's War "The Funk Hole".

Reticent nose upon opening but opened up nicely with aeration. Primary with candied red fruits. Palate of raspberry. Evolved with a soft texture. Just a bit weak and watery with a slight tart finish. Moderate length and a bit tart. Nice but not fabulous. A little disappointing in context with the highly touted 1998 vintage and the price.
