Wow. How could a wine this old hold up like this. Deep color. Leafy tertiary nose. Some tobacco and meaty notes. Initially very aromatic, but faded with time in the glass as expected. Nice balance. Sour cherry and nice structure. 94

What a wine! Indescribable aromas. Nothing fruit-like there, but so many different things I can't even put my finger on. Some nuttiness, some earth funk, but mostly it just smells like what I imagine a haunted Victorian mansion might smell like. This is very different from the other 1895 we had here, the Pichon-Baron, which practically had the consistency of motor oil. There is still a patina of red fruit in this wine but the material is stretched a bit, and starting to show its bones; it also has a tautness and sinewy tension that might help account for its longevity. On the finish the wine leaves a perfume of ancient wood, almost like the flavors of Cognac but not in its spirity form. It's probably fair to say this is one of those wines where the palate doesn't *quite* live up to the aromas, but oh, those aromas!--they're still haunting the empty glass an hour later.
