Acidity and structure, the hallmarks of 1996, remain but there are also the tell tale signs of maturity on the nose. I don't think this will improve. A good 1996 but no better.

Deep yellow, minimal bubbles. Ripe nose of green apples, and a vintage-typical toasty character. The palate is similar, broadly fruity, toasty and rich; youthful and quite delicious. I think I'm finally coming round to the '96s, or perhaps they're reaching a stage that I can better appreciate. This is a great wine at a ridiculous price - the embodiment of why wine writers call vintage champagne the best-value bubbly around. I hadn't intended to get champagne when I went to this wine merchant (I was going for a light German Kabinett), but this seemed a bargain. Now I'm glad I got it - and a bit sad that it looked to be the last one in the shop. This is excellent in a full but not oxidative style. If I see it again, I'll get a few more - I expect it will age quite well (up to 5 years+). My score would be higher if the price was taken into account. [The Wine Library, ~£27].
