The 2012 Gourt de Mautens Blanc is one of the finest white wines from the Southern Rhone. Tasted blind – Beautiful bouquet of summer flowers, buttery popcorn, toasty wood, and yellow orchard fruits. Full bodied with an oily texture, the only score deduction point was its high alcohol content. Chenin Blanc? Loire Valley? (reminds me of Richard Leroy) 2016? (86/100)

Double decanted. Spicy entry then a rich, caramel palate. Fabulous depth of flavour with silky layers of apple, toffee popcorn and an endive pick-me-up on the finish. Beautifully made- speaks of the region but massively over-delivers on the appellation. Drink now.

This is interesting. Reductive. Spicy, complex, wonderful melange of these wide range of grapes but totally coherent. Quite long. Lingers at top of throat. Definitely the most compelling Rasteau white I’ve ever had.

OK, prompted by some twitter exchanges... Today's GdM was more like the first. Certainly a strong reductive character, but not so challenging as to be unpleasant. But the complexity, meandering through different styles, at first Northern Rhone Roussanne (the wine itself is a complex Rhone blend), lots of white stone fruits and almost a Comte-taste...then mellowing and delivering almost Burgundian flavours which blind I would have picked as a more reductive Puligny. As I said 18/08/2015...a fun ride.

Rich, creamy, buttery, borderline fat, still vibrant in great balance. Fine acidity. Seems a point.
