  • from 375ml bottle, number 7 of 9 in the 2001 Kracher TBA collection. needs about an hour to open up. some fine tartrates sedimented in bottle.

very dark amber colour and viscous. intense, complex, layered nose that at various times shows ripe apricot, seville orange marmalade, mango extract, beeswax, honeysuckle and orange blossoms, ginger, hazelnut, and even whiffs of dried porcinis. unctuous and silky, it displays in mouth a similar cornucopia as in the nose, varying as it warms. a bright streak of acidity highlights the spice notes, and together they keep the appreciable sweetness in check as the concentrated layers of botrytis-infused flavour parade across the palate. remarkable and accented persistence.

fully developed and rich… i do wonder what may happen with more time… will it become tertiary? devolve into a cloying syrupy mess? but today, a delight to savour slowly.

7.5% AbV; a whopping 285g/L RS (very much into "Aszú Essencia" or ~10 Puttonyos territory); 7.9g/L acidity that does manage to accomplish balance; "Nouvelle Vague" fermentation and ageing (for eighteen months) in new oak

  • 2nd time I have had this. Both from Allred who last opened this 12 years ago. Dark brown color. Sweet with good acidity still. notes of white raisins and tropical fruits. Just a little below what I remeber from the first bottle. 94 points.

  • 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (EBCC): Deep maple color. An abundance of apricot and stone fruit, with pear liqueur, marmalade and pineapple as well. Superb length and concentration.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VI (Chicago, IL): From half-bottle. Intense botrytis; there are lots of typical botrytis spice notes, but also a slight hint of vanillin oak on the nose. The palate is concentrated botrytis; syrupy and sweet, a little goes a long way. Despite the chardonnay that goes into this I would have liked this to have a little more acidity to freshen up the wine. As it stands, it's pretty cloying if you're drinking more than a few small sips of it.

  • As I have written in the past, at their most desirable (to my taste preference) these wines are rich, thick, unctuous, and voluptuous with apricot marmalade, mango, toffee/brown sugar, and caramel notes. This may have been there at some point and perhaps passed that stage of its aging profile. If so, then it is time to drink although it will no doubt continue to age gracefully for several more years. But the rich, sweet apricot fruits nectar was gone and has turned more to a smokey charcoal layer over the fruits which were more subdued. Delightful never-the-less
