A private lunch (Restaurant 212, Amsterdam, NL): I have little (if any) experience with his Grands Crus, but I always find that the powerful, masculine, and fruit driven style of the estate suits the more modest wines very well, whether they be from Beaujolais or from the Côte d’Or. Firm tannic structure and ripe blue fruit, undergrowth on the nose, freshness from the stalks, earthy depth, good weight and mineral energy, chalky freshness, intense flavours and very good length.

First bottle since January, and has definitely improved since then. Pretty aromas of cherries and sous bois on the nose. Full-bodied and not nearly as tannic and stemmy as last time. This has softened and unwound, now showing more of its tangy black cherry and pomegranate fruit. There's good intensity and focus on the mid-palate, along with a lively acidity. Finishes with respectable length and subtle notes of chalk and spice. Paired beautifully with the lamb shanks that Kerry's Mom made. Still quite tannic and slightly restrained, this might be even better in another year or two. Very hard to do any better than this in the Cotes de Nuits for under $25. 89+ 50+5+12+15+7=89
