A pleasant surprise ... Smells and drinks like a classic lower-mid level bordeaux with black currant, plum, cedar, tobacco in a light-mid-bodied frame, still some grippy tannins that probably won't ever fully soften. Very nice with food. In the old-days this would be labeled a "lunchtime claret" and it serves that purpose admirably. Drink over next couple of years

PnP Ruby colored almost all the way to the rim. Some fruit aromas sneak in, but mostly its leather, herbs and some tobacco. A light fruit flavor on the entry and mid-palate with an herb finish.
Went well with steak and potatoes.

2nd tasting: Medium to dark red. Nose indicative of merlot grown in a maritime climate such as Blaye that opens over an hour. Initially closed, indicative of the 2010s. The Blaye/merlot influence yields sort of weedy/artichoke flavors which, being a native northern Californian, I like. Best within 5 years or so with good cellaring. Super value @ $12.

Youthful color and nose. Good structure, the tannins are still there but refined. Good length. Excellent surprise and fantastic QPR at $12.
