Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 86 points

  • A blend of Zinfandel (90%) and Petit Sirah (10%). 13,6% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Translucent and surprisingly youthful dark ruby color with a clear, luminous core. Sweet-toned nose with aromas of candied cherry marmalade, some aldehydic green apple tones, a little bit of toffee oak, light notes of green almonds, a hint of vanilla and a touch of blackberry jam. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and pretty juicy on the palate with flavors of fresh cranberries, some ripe wild strawberries, light brambly notes of raspberries, a little bit of vanilla, a sappy hint of sharp aldehydic greenness and a touch of sweet blackberry. The wine is quite high in acidity with soft, textural tannins. The finish is gently grippy, long and somewhat inky with and aftertaste of meaty umami, some peppery spice, a little bit of rusty iron, light cranberry tones, a green aldehydic hint of tangy salinity and a touch of boysenberry jam.

A pleasant, ripe and balanced old Zinfandel with surprisingly much fruit and life left to it. However, the wine seems to suffer from aldehydic greenness, lending a somewhat sharp, tangy Fino Sherry feel to its otherwise clean flavor profile, which really is a shame. This green aldehydic edge takes its toll on the score, but otherwise the wine is in great condition and offers quite a bit of pleasure for what it is. I wish this was only an off bottle and any other remaining bottles would be free of this aldehydic greenness.
