  • The flagship wine of Matteo Correggia: a Roero Nebbiolo that has been partly (50%) macerated with the skins for 8-10 days in stainless steel, partly (the other 50%) for a whopping 60 days in "rolling" new oak tonneaux barrels. After the maceration the first half is left to age in new barriques, the other half in those same tonneaux. Then mixed together and aged for a further 24 months in bottles.

Translucent black cherry color with a hint of maroon bricking in the rim. Fragrant, but quite sweet nose with layered aromas of cherry jam, ripe blackcurrants, sweet dark-toned oak, dusty wood and red and black raspberries with floral Nebbiolo nuances. In the mouth the wine feels full-bodied, extracted and extremely tannic with balanced, bright acidity. Rich, concentrated flavors of plummy fruit, sweet dark cherry, some ripe blackberries, a little sweet oak spice and a hint of tar. Very rich, succulent and extremely astringent, structured finish with pronounced tannic grip and flavors of ripe dark cherries, jammy red berries, sweet oaky notes, a little plummy fruit, hints of tar and a touch of cocoa.

Flavor-wise the wine feels like a modernist Barolo, but the impressive, tannic structure is extremely tightly wound and would feel imposing even amongst the most classic traditionalist Barolo producers. This is a head turner for people who think that Roero can produce only simple, easy-drinking Nebbiolos with no aging potential. This wine is at almost 5 years of age too painfully young and very primary, showing the cellaring capabilities of the best Roero Nebbiolos. Although the wine is a bit too ripe and oaked for my tastes, the concentration and structure give the wine such aging capabilities I can imagine this wine starts drinking wonderfully in 10-15 years, if it just sheds its baby fat and the oak integrates away. A remarkable effort and at 29€ gives better value for the money than many of the Barolos and Barbarescos in the same price range. Recommended.
