HOWARDNZ from years back gave apt note--excellent capture of the wine. The fruit in this bottling was kicking it, and the earth and mineral backdrop lent substance. Tannin was quite integrated and balanced. My observation of the varietal, and this wine with it being exemplary, is the length on the palate is notably short of the expectation the initial nose and palate suggest. It's a curious juxtaposition. Drank over several nights and day 1 was best, though it held up nicely the vividness of the fruit diminished. Another in the cellar and no hurry, and I'll look forward to it in a year or two.

The better of Vajra's two Dolcettos from older vines on two special sites. Deep iridescent purple. On bouquet, wild blackberries and dark cherries, black plums and dark chocolate with a violet top note. On palate, that wild blackberry, with cacao, black liquorice, cassis, and a touch of blueberry. Tart black cherry but also some inner sweetness. Intense with lively acidity. Old vine concentration and serious structure and volume. Spherical, silky tannins. I think it'd improve still further with another 2-3 years in the cellar.

Very nice wine. The intensity of the fruit is striking. The noise is very expressive and to me I get the aroma of a freshly baked blueberry pie - from the concentration of the fruit to a touch of the buttery crust (does Vajra use any oak on the Coste & Fossati? I didn't think so). A burst of fruit again on the palate. It is an honest and beautiful expression of the grape.
I'll be curious to see how these age. The vibrancy of the fruit is what is very exciting right now, but I'd also think there is enough stuffing here to last a while. Although I'm not sure I'll be able to keep my hands off my other 2...

A high quality, old vines Dolcetto from a very good vintage. Deep iridescent purple. A bouquet of blackberry, dark chocolate, cherry kirsch and a touch of mahogany furniture polish. In the mouth, crème de cassis, wild blackberry, blueberry, liquorice and cacao. Good fresh acidity. Old vine concentration and serious structure and volume. Both the bouquet and palate improved from a day under cork at room temperature. It's pretty primary now and would, I think, be improved by 2-3 years in the cellar to settle down.
