  • Still young by barolo standards. Lacking that red hue that a good barolo should have.

  • Absolutely lovely from the get go. Serious and traditional but brimming with ripe red fruits, rose petal, a touch of coffee and well integrated tannins on a long, smooth complex finish. Ready to drink but can age.

  • There are only a few stores in the world where I'll essentially buy anything they recommend, assuming the wine is from a region and grape that I'm interested in. Two such places in NY are Chambers St. and Flatiron, and I always find the time the scan their emails both for the detailed info they impart and the chance to try something new. They usually represent the whack and the off beaten track, respectively.

So I think this one came from Flatiron, and it's among the first '10 Barolos I've tried. Figured it was going to be young, but I was in the mood and there was no stopping me.

On initial pour, and for the first hour I was disappointed. Clearly tightly wound and needing time, but there was a low level undertone of a stemmy, wood-like flavor I couldn't shake. On every whiff or taste it was there, and it was like my palate rebelled by just saying no to everything else the wine had to offer. Stoppered the sucker, stuck it in the fridge and said not tonight Josephine.

Luckily this was the right move for a change. While it didn't soar on day 2, the unpleasantness was completely gone. Funny how then it was like everything else kind of opened up. Fragrant nose of red berries, rose, with sweet anise in the background. Light and supple texture, showing its youth but also the balance to age gracefully against the fine grained tannins. In short, I think this just needs a few years to be a real treat from the get-go. I now suspect that the weedy impression will become a thing of the past and my rating will improve.
