  • Crimson in color. 13.8% ABV. Savory nose of dark fruits, olive brine, smoked meats and flowers. Medium body with perfect acidity. Rich and polished. Tremendous structure and concentration. Cherries, blood, olive tapenade and minerals on the palate. The finish is long and silky. Singular wine that has aged beautifully. Best over the next several years.

  • P&P through an aerator. A bit of spritz at first, causing me some worry. Not sure what's going on there. Aggressive aeration and time resolved that thankfully. And this bottle is definitely not as 'in your face' as previous bottles. It really needed some time to come around. Pop-and-pour NOT recommended. Give this a few hours-minimum-decanting for best results. Lots of funky, savory flavors, although for me, this bottle was a bit flat on the midpalate, especially at first. Blackberry fruit shows up earlier than with previous bottles, but still far overshadowed by the savory aspects. One thing I've found with the HP wines...they take a lot of work to enjoy. I thought at 12 years past vintage it would be a sure P&P win, but that is just not the case here. All in all, this is still a stellar wine, even with the spritz and midpalate flab, so I'm being super picky here. Enjoyed it so much I finished the bottle in one sitting! Drink now with several hours of air - 2032.

  • The bottle I drank went through a lot...ordered for a ski weekend 3 years ago, the shipment arrived late and so spent a night outside (presumably freezing) before being brought in and left in a basement for 3 years...so it's hard to judge.

All that said -- still a fascinating drink (perhaps more so because of the above)? The nose was certainly there -- all the earth, savory notes, and smokiness that the other notes capture. Palate was a bit flat and I felt lacking in structure...but really impossible to judge because of the above.

  • Right on the border of wine geek fun v delicious. Still has a decade or more life. Strong Syrah pepper notes on nose and palate, with midweight body and zippy acidity.

  • 2 hour decant. Plenty of rocks funk and life still. You either like rocks wines or you don't.
