Second of three from auction. Entertaining, so drank in a couple pf hours and not really having the opportunity to track its evolution. My sense was this bottle lacked some of the depth and complexity I recalled from the first. May just've been it hadn't opened fully but inclined to drink the last one in 2024

Noting retrospectively but this was a super Pinot that really reminded me of good Burgundy. Intense from first opening with real character. One of 6 from a recent auction, they seem to be holding up really well.

Under cork, which may not have been a wise choice, as the wine has lost freshness and shows serious age, more like a 30 years old Burgundy, with colour of dull red-orange. However this may be due to improper storage or travel shock, as I have just recently bought from a reputable dealer in UK. It tastes new world with very ripe blue and black fruit especially plum/prune with adequate acidity to balance the palette. Definitely not for fan of red burgundies with a sense of elan, lissom textures and crystal-clear fruit. If this is a normal bottle then DRINK UP.

In NZ terroir terms, Kiwa is a grand cru site. From (then) 24 year old vines planted on the alluvial gravels of the 2 ha Cleland vineyard on the Martinborough Terraces. From the decade, I rate the 2013 vintage at the top level, with 2015 and perhaps 2019 (I haven't had enough 2019s to be yet sure). The younger-vines Te Muna Road Kupe is regarded by Escarpment as the top of their pinot noir hierarchy, but I - most vintages - have rated the Kiwa their top pinot.
Whole bunch 50%, new oak 40%. Under cork. Still quite primary maroon-ruby, with some wateriness at the rim. A lovely, lifted, expressive bouquet - very 2013 Martinborough - of Morello cherries, both black and red plums, wild raspberries, dark red rose and violet florals, with some mixed dried herbs. In the mouth, ripe, with the initial impression of fruit sweetness. Not over-ripe. Also, not the typical Martinborough bramble and earth and no longer dark and brooding Beginning to open up. No herbaceous notes. Now red fruited and exuberant. Rich, complex and concentrated, yet balanced and elegant. Bright acidity. Moderate alcohol (13.5% ABV). Refined, suave tannins. A long, dry, savoury finish. Now in its prime until about 2028. A special Martinborough pinot noir. 94+.

Very good indeed! Reminiscent of a good Bourgogne but with more fruit. Hard to describe the individual taste notes. A real pleasure to drink. Even better than some other Escarpment pinots, which are generally very good.
